The problem
You have full bars in the living room and nothing in the basement. Video calls freeze in the room you actually work in. Somebody suggested a mesh kit, you bought one, and it helped a little but not enough. The honest answer is that most homes and small offices were never surveyed, they were guessed at: one box from the internet provider, shoved in whatever closet the cable happened to enter, expected to cover three floors and a yard through plaster and brick. That is not a home network installation, it is a delivery.
Why it matters
WiFi is radio, and radio has physics. Coverage is decided by how many access points there are, where they sit, and what the building puts between them and you. Plaster over wire lath in an older DC or Arlington house, a brick chimney stack in the middle of the plan, a stairwell that turns the wrong way, a kitchen full of metal appliances sitting between the router and the back bedroom: each of those eats signal, and none of it shows up on a drawing. Adding more boxes to a bad layout usually makes it worse, because now your devices have more mediocre options to bounce between. The fix is a walk-through first, which is where a home network installation should start: measure what actually reaches each room, find where the building eats it, then place the right number of access points in the right spots and wire them properly. A well-planned two-access-point install beats a badly placed six-node mesh, and costs less. This is design and installation work. Questions
Questions people actually ask
Can you just tell me which mesh system to buy?
We can, but it is usually the wrong question. The brand matters far less than how many access points you need and where they go. We would rather survey the place first and then tell you the cheapest thing that will actually work.
Do I have to run cables through my walls?
Not always. Wired access points are better and we will tell you where it is worth it, but there are decent options when running cable is not practical, including using existing coax or electrical wiring as a path.
My internet plan is 1 gigabit and my WiFi is slow. Is that the provider?
Almost never. Speed at the wall and speed at your laptop are different problems. We test both so you know which one you actually have before anyone sells you a faster plan.
What does a home network installation actually involve?
A walk-through with a meter first, then access points placed and wired where the measurements say they should go, then a second walk-through to prove it worked. We do this across Washington DC, Northern Virginia and Suburban Maryland, and the visit to measure and quote it costs nothing.
My WiFi was fine for a year and now it drops every evening. Is this the right page?
Probably not. This page is for designing and installing coverage. A network that used to work and now misbehaves at particular times is usually something else transmitting nearby, and the way to find it is to measure the air rather than add equipment.
