The problem
The power flickers for two seconds and the recorder, the server and half the network come back confused, or do not come back at all. Somebody drives over to power-cycle things. Occasionally something is corrupted badly enough that it needs rebuilding from scratch, and that is when you discover how good the backups were.
Why it matters
Brief power interruptions are far more common than full outages, and they are harder on equipment than people expect, because a hard stop mid-write is what corrupts a recording drive or a database. A battery backup unit, the box normally sold as a UPS, gets you through the short blips entirely, and that covers most of them. The part almost everyone skips is what happens when the outage outlasts the battery: without anything watching, the battery simply runs flat and every device drops exactly as hard as if there had been no battery at all, having merely postponed it by twenty minutes. I already have a UPS under the desk. Is that enough?

How long will it keep things running?
