Why Does My Internet Keep Going Out?

Internet keeps going out? One simple test tells you whether it is a wireless problem or a line problem, and each one has a completely different fix.

When your internet keeps going out, the cause is almost always one of two things: the wireless signal inside the building, or the line coming into it. They are different problems with different fixes, and most of the money wasted on this gets wasted treating one as the other.

So do this before anything else. Plug a laptop or a desktop straight into the box where the internet enters the house, using a cable, and leave it connected for a day. If that wired device stays online while the phones and laptops keep dropping, your line is fine and you have a wireless problem. If the wired device drops at the same moment everything else does, it is the line, and no amount of new wireless equipment will fix it. That one test is worth more than a dozen speed tests, because it halves the possible causes in a single move.

After that, the timing tells you the rest. These are the patterns people describe to us most often, and what each one usually turns out to be.

It drops at the same time every day

If the outage lands in the same window every day, something is running on a schedule. In rough order of how often we find them:

  • A provider maintenance window. Many providers push updates in the small hours. The drop is brief, it is deliberate, and it is not your equipment.
  • A device on a timer. A smart plug, or an outlet wired to a light timer, with the router plugged into it. This sounds unlikely until it happens to you.
  • Heat. Equipment in a closed cabinet, or on a shelf that gets afternoon sun. Routers and modems slow down and then reset when they get too hot, and afternoon sun keeps a schedule as reliable as any clock.
  • Address renewal. Your router hands each device a network address with a time limit on it, and when that timer runs out the device has to ask for a new one. On healthy equipment nobody ever notices. On failing equipment the renewal fails and everything looks dead for a minute.
  • A neighbor's equipment. Gear that switches on at the same time each evening, sitting on the same wireless channel as yours, is indistinguishable from your own equipment failing.

The useful move here is patience, not shopping. Write down the exact minute it drops for a week. That log is the diagnosis.

It drops every few minutes

Short, frequent drops usually mean the line is not holding a stable connection to the provider, or the equipment terminating that line is failing. Water in a buried cable, a corroded connector, a splitter somebody added when a TV went in the basement, a run of cable that was fine ten years ago and is not fine now. Heat shows up here too: a modem that has aged into resetting itself every few minutes once it warms up is one of the most common causes we see.

This pattern is rarely wireless. If a wired computer rides straight through it, look again at the wireless side. Otherwise, treat it as a line fault and start collecting evidence.

It drops in the evening or at night

Two completely different things produce this, which is why it frustrates people for months.

The first is congestion. Cable internet shares capacity along the street, so from roughly seven to eleven in the evening you are competing with every household around you. Speeds sag, calls stutter, connections time out, and it is fine again by morning.

The second is the wireless band getting crowded when everyone comes home. Wireless equipment uses two bands. The one that travels furthest through walls is also the one every neighbor's older gear uses, along with cordless phones, baby monitors, some doorbells, and microwave ovens. In a townhouse block or an apartment building, evening is exactly when that band becomes unusable, and your devices prefer it precisely because it reaches them best.

Same symptom, two causes, and the wired test separates them.

It drops randomly, with no pattern

Genuinely random drops are more often wireless than they are the internet line. Interference does not keep a schedule. Neither does a device wandering between two access points that both look equally poor to it, or a channel that overlaps with two neighbors on one side of the house and not the other.

The fix here is measurement, not replacement. That is what a wireless signal survey is for: walking the building and recording actual signal and noise room by room, so placement and channel decisions rest on numbers instead of guesses. Buying a bigger mesh kit to fix interference usually makes it worse, because you have handed your devices more mediocre options to bounce between. Placement beats hardware, and it costs less.

Only one device drops

Then it is that device, not your internet. An old wireless adapter, a power saving setting that puts the adapter to sleep, an out of date driver, or a laptop that lives at the far edge of coverage while everything else sits comfortably inside it. Worth checking before you call anyone, because it is not a network problem.

Everything drops and the lights on the box change

That is the line, and it is the clearest evidence you will ever get. When the indicator lights on the box where the internet enters change color or start blinking in a new pattern, you are watching it lose its connection to the provider. Nothing inside your house causes that.

Photograph the lights while it is happening and note the time. Intermittent faults are the hardest thing to get a provider to fix, because the technician arrives on a good day, finds everything working, and closes the ticket. A timestamped photo and a week of logged drop times change that conversation.

What to do if your internet keeps going out

The order matters, because each step rules something out.

  1. Run the wired test for a full day. Everything else depends on that answer.
  2. Log the exact times it drops for a week: same time daily, every few minutes, or scattered.
  3. Check what the equipment is plugged into and whether it can breathe. Timers and hot cabinets are cheap to rule out.
  4. Photograph the indicator lights during an outage.
  5. If it is the line, take the log and the photos to the provider and ask for a line test, not a replacement box.
  6. If it is wireless, get the building measured before you buy anything else.

Wireless problems and line problems cost different things to fix

A wireless problem is solved with survey work, placement, wiring where it is practical, and channel tuning. It is a one time job and it stays fixed, because the physics of your building does not change.

A line problem is different, and this is the part people find hard to accept. You cannot make a single internet line reliable. Every line fails eventually, and when the fault sits in the provider's network or in a cable two streets over, there is nothing you can buy that repairs it faster. The only real fix is a second, independent path, in place before you need it. That is what backup internet means: another line that fails differently from your first one, wired so it takes over on its own in seconds. A second cable in the same trench is not a backup. A cellular connection, or a satellite service such as Starlink, is, because it fails for entirely different reasons.

In this region, an outage is usually lost work

The DC, Northern Virginia and Maryland area has one of the highest concentrations of remote and hybrid workers in the country, many of them federal employees and contractors whose whole workday runs over the home connection. That changes the math.

If an outage costs you an evening of streaming, spending money to remove it is hard to justify, and we will say so. If it costs you a missed briefing, a shift you could not cover, or a card terminal that stopped taking payments on a Saturday, then a second connection that takes over automatically is not a luxury, and it usually costs less over a year than one lost day. That is a calculation only you can run, and it is worth running honestly before anyone sells you equipment.

Either way, start with the cable. A day of testing tells you which of the two problems you actually have.
